Fresh light on dark days of sugar
BOWEN is known for its gusty breezes, mangoes and white sandy beaches, and, as the location for Baz Luhrmann's film Australia. Behind the Cane, an ambitious musical initiated by the Queensland Music Festival's artistic director Deborah Conway, tells another Australian story about the 62,000 indentured South Sea Islanders who toiled in Queensland's sugar cane industry during the late 1800s."It's a horrible and confused history [of] slavery," says the musical's director Sean Mee.
"There were instances when the islanders were indentured but also incidences when children were stolen off beaches.
"At federation in 1901, 60,000 islanders were then deported and the unscrupulous people who had brought them to Queensland were employed [by the authorities] to take them back. Dumping them in Papua New Guinea was a death sentence," Mee says.
About a thousand South Sea Islanders opted to stay in Queensland rather than go to New Guinea, but doing so required them to hide during the day and work nights in the cane fields.
One of the show's memorable songs is The Land of the Fair and the Free, a rousing parody detailing the mass deportation, written by Andree Greenwell and David Bridie.
Intense rehearsals for Behind the Cane began six weeks ago, but the production has been a long time in the making.
Community theatre writers Margery and Michael Forde interviewed 500 South Sea Islanders, and with an ear for the vernacular wrote the biting script and lyrics. Choosing which stories to present, given the writers' aim to be as inclusive as possible, was difficult for a show running just 80 minutes.
The descendants of the individuals whose stories are told appear on stage as part of the production team's strategy to empower the cast.
Priscilla Miller plays multiple roles, including that of her great-great aunt Olwyn Power, who worked in a bakery and dreamed of owning a red Pontiac. On opening night she delivered a joyful Risin' Up, recalling all the power and groove of Motown.
Miller praised the director Mee, saying "he is amazing how he develops the natural talents in our community.
"Lots of people have heard stories, some true and some not, and the show is great because it gives people some idea just what indentured labourers had to go through to become Australian citizens."
The production was impressively tight given it involves choirs from Queens Beach, Whitsunday Christian and Collinsvale schools, an adult choir, a brass band and an ensemble of young dancers and actors.
