Norway massacre: British traders helped supply Breivik's arsenal of weapons

A Sunday Telegraph investigation examined thousands of online transactions to uncover the purchases he made over a seven-month period. It showed that an essential chemical for the bomb was bought from a British trader for just a few pounds, and that a British tool company sold Breivik equipment which he used to make poison-tipped bullets.

The purchases raise questions over whether the killings could have been stopped through scrutiny of his online buying. Norwegian security services appear not to have examined Breivik’s eBay transactions when his name was placed on an intelligence watch list four months ago after he bought chemical fertiliser from a Polish company.

In other developments:

* The killer may have also wanted to bomb Norway’s royal palace and the headquarters of the country’s ruling Labour Party but did not go through with the plans;

* Breivik has demanded that in prison he should not be given halal meat and would wear only red clothes;

* His lawyer, Geir Lippestad, said his client seemed unable to grasp that the public had reacted with revulsion to his murderous acts.

The involvement of UK-based suppliers also raises questions about whether the British security services could have picked up his suspicious purchases. MI5 is thought to monitor eBay and other internet sites for individuals buying chemicals which can be used for terrorism.

Last week it was revealed that Breivik had bought 32 litres of nitro fuel, used in radio-controlled aircraft, from two Norwegian online stores to use in bomb-making.

The way Breivik spread his buying across several countries suggests he was aware of how to evade monitoring.

Prof Paul Wilkinson, of the Centre for the study of Terrorism and Political Violence at the University of St Andrews, said: “With hindsight I think the Norwegians need to step up monitoring of these transactions and of domestic extremist groups.

“I think there is a strong case that with closer monitoring there would have been a chance of finding out what Breivik was up to, taking him into questioning and preventing this terrible sequence of events.”

The Sunday Telegraph discovered that in November Breivik used his eBay account, under the username “andrewbrei”, to buy about 500g of sulphur powder from a trader in Enfield, north London.
