Police Log: Strange Rash Of Car Thefts Continues

On Friday, August 5 around 5:37 a.m. a South Kingstown Police officer responded to the 100 block of North Road for a report of two males going through vehicles.  Police arrived on scene and received reports from nearby residents that they observed two males, one wearing a red shirt with a shaved head, and another wearing a black shirt, wandering through the neighborhood.  The resident then went outside and found that his vehicle had been entered and his glove box removed.  His radar detector was also taken as well. 

Another resident drove by the officers soon after and complained that his two vehicles had also been entered.  In this case the culprit(s) had taken a Garmin GPS system, a pair of Ray Ban sunglasses, and a pair of Maui Jim sunglasses. 

Police quickly canvassed the area and found two suspects matching the descriptions given, later identified as a 17-year-old South Kingstown male and Jason Kendrick, 39, of 1213 Kingstown Road in South Kingstown.

During questioning Kendrick denied having any involvement in the thefts, but admitted he was aware his counterpart was entering vehicles along North Road while they were walking the bike path and drinking alcoholic beverages.

Police found several of the stolen goods in a bag belonging to the youth and took the two men into custody. The 17-year-old male was charged with one felony count of possession of scheduled drugs in addition to three counts of receiving stolen goods. He was released to the custody of his mother with a pending court date.

Strange Car Entries Continue

On Sunday, August 7 around 3:00 p.m. police received a complaint from a Dixon Street resident stating that her three cars had been rifled through, though nothing appeared to be missing, including a GPS unit that had been left on the dash of one vehicle. 

Earlier that same day, police responded to Schaeffer Street to take a complaint from a couple stating their two cars had been entered as well.  In this case the glove compartments of both cars were open and disturbed, though nothing appeared to have been taken.

Arrests

Hamilton Chavez-Ochoa, 21, of 80 Marino St. in Providence was arrested on Saturday, August 6 around 3:22 p.m. for driving without a license after a traffic stop on Route 1 near Pond Street.  At the stop police noted an outstanding arrest warrant issued by the FBI for Chavez-Ochoa for deportation.  He was taken to SKPD, processed, and later transferred to the ACI to await pickup by immigration agents.
