Part Two Of Our Visit To The John Carter Edit Bay With Director Andrew Stanton

Hopefully you've already caught the first half of my report from Barsoom Studios in Emeryville, California, where Finding Nemo and Wall-E director Andrew Stanton was on hand to show off the first footage from his next film, John Carter . The movie is a departure for Stanton on many levels, his first foray into live-action and his first attempt at starting a trilogy-- "Most people know me at Pixar as the guy that doesn't like to do sequels or very reluctant to do sequels. The irony wasn't lost on me when I asked them to do this first book to option the first 3." But one thing Stanton certainly didn't lose from his Pixar experience is a penchant for tons and tons of research.

Between the slideshow presentation that came before the footage, in which Stanton showed us how he transformed the Utah desert into a Martian landscape and other magic tricks, and the reams of concept art and props that surrounded us as we ate lunch at Pixar later that day, the John Carter team was seemingly laying down all their cards-- though since we weren't allowed to take any photos, and none of those images came with plot details, there's still plenty being kept close to the vest. Since I'm not nearly as good as Stanton at explaining the visual world he's created and what he's aiming for here, I'll mostly be relying on this words from here.

He started the presentation, in fact, by showing this anachronistic image , a Frank Frazetta illustration of John Carter and the Princess Dheja that Stanton admits has unfortunately become pop culture's main associations with the John Carter of Mars stories, which were first published in 1912. For his film, which keeps the main character as a Civil War veteran and is set in the late 1800s, Stanton relied on a more period look, even though this was mostly taking place on a planet whose history didn't actually exist:

"I want to feel like I'm really there. I want to feel like it's really happening. This is not what somebody wished for; this is what really happened. This is the source of the book. Then I realized that's what it is: It's a period film of a period we just don't know about. It's as if somebody has done their Mars research really, really well and called in all the authorities.

Life along the Great Barrier Reef is full of dangers when you are a tiny clown fish. And for Marlin, a single parent determined to protect his only son Nemo, there are constant fears and anxieties. When, on his first day of school, Nemo defies his father and swims off alone to investigate a boat, he is suddenly scooped up by a diver as Marlin helplessly watches. Marlin turns desperate as he frantically swims off in search for his son. As he passes a school of fish he bumps into Dory, an agreeable blue tang with severe short-term memory loss, who offers to help. Together this aquatic odd couple set out on an impossible mission, finding themselves in troubled waters and contending with such hazards as sharks, deadly angler fishes and a forest of jellyfish. Meanwhile, in a dentist's office overlooking Sydney Harbor, Nemo has landed in a fish tank that is home to a colorful group of characters who want to initiate him into their gang. When word of Marlin and Dory's ocean adventures gets back to Nemo, he is so thrilled to learn of his father's search for him that he becomes motivated to move forward with a daring escape plan of his own. Nemo, an adventurous young clownfish, is unexpectedly taken to a dentist's office aquarium. It's up to Marlin his worrisome father, and Dory a friendly but forgetful tang fish, to make the epic journey to bring Nemo home. Meanwhile, Nemo's captor, a dentist, drops him into a fish tank in his office on Sydney Harbour. There, Nemo meets its residents — a group of aquarium fish called the "Tank Gang", led by a crafty and ambitious moorish idol named Gill. The fish are frightened to learn that the dentist plans to give Nemo to his niece, Darla, who has previously killed a pet fish by shaking its container. Gill gives Nemo a role in his most recent escape plan, which involves jamming the tank's filter and forcing the dentist to remove the fish from the tank while he cleans it manually. Nemo attempts to jam the filter using a rock, however his first attempt fails and nearly kills him because of the fact that the fan is too strong for the rock to be wedged in, but he later succeeds after a friendly pelican named Nigel visits with news of Marlin's adventure. The plan, however, is backfired when the dentist installs a new high-tech filter and has no need to take the fish out of the tank.
