Imagine: Iraq in Venice, BBC Two
For 35 years, contemporary art in Iraq was a no-no, unless it was eerily duly figurative or a showy mural glorifying Saddam Hussein. But this year, six Iraqi artists were invited to the event's most prestigious annual contemporary art in the world, the Venice Biennale. It may be of little importance that the parents of Alan Yentob came from Iraq, but last night Imagine
They say the best literature of spring crops ravaged or oppressed, making the novels of, say, Milan Kundera or Primo Levi, more than the novels of Ian McEwan or Don DeLillo resonate. But such a ruthless criterior rarely applied to contemporary art. However, personally, I have always found much of the work - for example - once the YBA, like Tracey Emin emptiness, child and decadent in the sense of the word less romantic. And I wondered if this has nothing to do with life relatively comfortable and cozy they lead. However, a repressive society would never even give artists the chance to explore their own unmediated uncensored so that we can see if they are up to - or exceed - their Western contemporaries.
But here we were presented by six artists wealthy - Adel Abidin, Akoudani Ahmed Ali Assaf, Azad Nanakeli, Halim Al Karum and Walid Siti. After going through the struggles of exile, and received little or no financial support for this exhibition of Iraq naturally more concerned with trying to cope with a lack of schools, food and more pressing, drinking water (currently more expensive than gasoline), they now had a kind of freedom and a need to talk. "Three stories of love by the canal, a ruined building a few hundred meters from the two huge main building where most of the other artists exhibited. Making the most of a limited budget, a broken stool and forced isolation, they decided to look on the bright side. It was decided the perfect way to the dilapidated house, because it reminds them of bombs ravaged the abandoned houses they had seen back in Iraq. And it has to be said – at least from my decadent, Western perspective – that all the artwork ended up looking splendidly “street” up against the crumbling brickwork, spot lit by shards of sunlight entering through picturesque cracks.Venice Street Map - News
These songs had been contrived to be insidiously catchy in order to get Saddam's people to sing along in a comradely fashion, and thus take onboard the songs' sycophantic and absurdly gung-ho lyrics (“We will wipe America from the map”, “By Allah,
What makes skating downtown different than Venice or Santa Monica? Downtown is a place where there's lots of stuff to skate, and there are certain times during the week where there's very little traffic. You don't get kicked out of places too,
