The city's mosquito program was instituted to help battle West Nile virus, which is transmitted by the bite of a mosquito. So far this year, the Panhandle Public Health District has not recorded any human cases of the disease.

but round two in the seasonal battle is starting now, local health officials say. Starting this week through early September, they'll be watching for the emergence of mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus and St. Louis encephalitis.

New Weapons in Battle Against NJ Mosquitoes | Notes From The Green ...
The wet spring and summer have given birth to a bumper crop of New Jersey mosquitoes , increasing the risk of West Nile Virus. This summer, state health officials have found more cases of West Nile Virus than in previous years. World-wide, mosquitoes deliver 1 of every 5 insect-transmitted diseases, including malaria, encephalitis, dengue fever and yellow fever. The majority of mosquito-borne diseases are problematic in tropical countries but global warming is pushing them north. Cases of dengue fever have already been reported in southern Texas and the Southwest.
In the battle against mosquitoes, scientists are developing some amazing new weapons:
Researchers at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN have discovered a way to prevent mosquitoes from smelling their prey. Unable to use scent to find their prey, humans become essentially invisible to mosquitoes. The discovery has the potential to be remarkably more powerful than DEET and can be applied to biting flies and other insects that use scent to zero in on their victims. British researchers are experimenting with genetic birth control to fight dengue fever-spreading mosquitoes. They have created genetically-modified male mosquitoes that will only mate with females from a different species. The resultant mutant offspring are not able to reach mature adulthood when mosquitoes begin to bite. A test in the Cayman Islands last year reduced mosquito populations by 80%. A joint U.S.-British effort also directed at fighting dengue fever has produced genetically-altered mosquitoes that are unable to fly, severely reducing the insect’s range and ability to feed on humans.Until these emerging techniques become available, the best way to protect your New Jersey family from West Nile Virus and other mosquito-borne diseases is with ChemTec’s NJ mosquito abatement service.
