Fatal Tour Bus Crash Near Bath
Officials held a press conference Monday afternoon regarding that crash, saying the investigation will continue into exactly what happened, and what caused the fatal crash.
The bus was traveling along Route 390 near Bath, New York, when authorities say the bus blew a front tire and the driver lost control. After flipping over, the bus finally came to rest in a wooded area along the highway.
Two people were killed in the crash, and all 35 people on board were taken to area hospitals for their injuries. Authorities have now identified the victims as 52 year old Sakina Kiazar, and 66 year old Shail Khanna.
Twenty other people remain in the hospital. Officials say the bus was carrying a tour group from New Delhi, India.
New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald said: "Safety is our top priority here at DOT. We have a rigorous Motor Carrier Safety program which includes vehicle safety inspections and post-crash investigations. We will be working closely with the State Police, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, and state Department of Motor Vehicles to find out as much as we can about this crash. I extend my deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones in this accident, and hope for a speedy recovery for the injured."
Authorities say the driver, identified as John DiNardo of Rochester, has a perfect driving record and that alcohol and driver fatigue are not suspected in this crash.
New York State Police Superintendent Joseph A. D'Amico said, "Commercial Bus Enforcement and maintaining bus passenger safety remains a priority for the New York State Police. We are committed to keeping New York's roadways safe by aggressively enforcing the Vehicle and Traffic Laws."
The bus was owned by a North Tonawanda based company, Bedore Tours. Officials say the bus was inspected, and that no mechanical issue was known of prior to the blown tire.
State Police say they will continue their investigation, and hope information from the "black box" onboard the bus should shed more light onto what caused this deadly crash.
