Highland Park butterflies to be auctioned off next month

The first 12 Highland Park butterflies displayed in the downtown will be up for auction on Aug. 10, according to the organizers of the local art event,  Project Butterfly. More butterfly auctions on eBay are slated to begin Aug. 20, Aug. 30 and Sept. 10.

The four auctions will last 10 days each, with the proceeds split between the artists who decorated the butterflies and the Art Center in Highland Park that helped sponsor the event, said one of the organizers, Larry Hillman, of Hillco Investment Properties, Inc.

An online catalog at hpbutterfly.com is available for prospective butterfly buyers to view. The Aug. 10 eBay auction link will be on the site for buyers to start bidding. Those who don’t want to use an eBay account may submit bids to BID@HPButterfly.Com.

Butterflies sold within 20 miles of Highland Park will be shipped for free, Hillman said.

Earlier this summer, residents flocked to the Project Butterfly kick off event to watch the unveiling of nearly 30 fiberglass butterflies along Central Avenue between Green Bay Road and Second Street.

Local retailers paid for the project by contributing monthly to a marketing fund, Hillman said. The stores are: Betts Boutique, B Contemporary, Kaehler Luggage, HiLand Art and Frame, Nail Bar, Posh Essentials, Beanstalk, Pieces Gallery and Free People boutique.
