Residents react to potential reopening of Flint city jail

They hope to the open the empty lock-up facility atop police headquarters at least temporarily, in a pilot program to find out whether the extra jail space has an effect on crime in the nation's most violent city.

"I'm sure it's going to help," said resident Joe King, 63. "It's disturbing when people know you have people committing crimes and you can't do anything with them."

Police Chief Alvern Lock and state police Capt. Rick Arnold said today that misdemeanor offenders are often arrested and immediately released because of a lack of jail space .

The timing on this seems highly questionable. Imagine, the jail to open (or at least a push to open) weeks before the primaries. I'm sure there is a lot more smoke and mirrors than there is a REAL attempt to actually do this. Plus, if it is a short term idea what are we really accomplishing? This is just one more obvious attempt for Walling to justify is time in office. Walling is still a waste and will be as long as he is allowed to be in office. CITY OF FLINT, to the right thing. DO NOT ALLOW HIM ANOTHER TERM!!!!

I believe that it works for some people. You are a great example, and I'm guessing you were a pretty decent person before your stay in jail. There has to be a better way to rehabilitate people and deter crime in our city. I am going to say jobs. People want jobs to make money and keep them busy. People with money to pay their bills and to buy good food are happy. If we don't do something about the economy then crime will continue to increase. Obviously economy goes hand in hand with education, when people are busy trying to make their life better they will be more apt to learn or send their kids to learn. Its a vicious cycle I admit!

C ome Heller high water…

What “they” say is true this time, Flint voters. If you really want to cut crime – including murders – you gotta vote next week to reopen the city jail. Petty crooks become not-so-petty crooks. But let’s not kid ourselves here. A city jail isn’t going to solve Flint’s crime problem. That'll require the sudden resurrection of the nuclear family, the reintroduction of shame to society and possibly even the legalization of drugs, none of which is going to happen. I made jokes last week about Donald Trump and his hair running for president, but someone asked what I really thought about him as a candidate. So, OK, I think he won’t run. He has the ego, but he also has the baggage. When he has to disclose his income, he’ll get cold feet. And since we’re on the subject, I think the Republicans are in big trouble. All their top contenders – Palin, Trump, Newt, Mitt – are cartoon characters. If the nominee is one of them, write it in Sharpie: Obama wins another term. I love the gym. I hate the gym. Why? I love exercise. But when I walked into the locker room the other evening there was a naked guy standing happy as you please in front of the mirror blow-drying his hairy backside. Sorry, sorry, I know, mental image. But how’d you like to be me? For the love of Mike, mister, have you no humanity? My eyes, they burn. Funniest commercial out there right now: the one where the kid is horrified by his parents singing “Just Call Me Angel” in the car. We do that. Pity our kids. Reader Stu Allen says this about my column on gas prices: “Chances are good that your 401k or pension fund holds stock in these companies. Lookin' for a bright side here. I'll be riding my bike a lot more this summer.” Well said, Stu. But Paranoid Andy does not deal in positive thinking. And when you say pensions, most people these days tilt their heads like dogs: “What are these pension things of which you speak?” Hit a softball in anger for the first time since last August. My deltoids, wingnoids, blingnoids and everynoids are aching. How old am I again? Trying to last one more season to play with my oldest. Not sure I’ll make it. I wonder if he can age faster. Need Has a Face. This week it looks like Maria, a new mom who is moving into a new apartment. She needs a high chair, VCR, couch, kitchen table and more.
