Adult softball leagues give players continue opportunity
Michelle Schlichtig has a ways to go to catch Jamie Moyer, who hopes to pitch in the major leagues next season at age 49.
Like the former Phillie left-hander, though, Schlichtig plans on pitching well into middle age.
And she just might get the chance.
Schlichtig, a former star pitcher at Haddon Heights High School who went on to lead Rutgers University-Camden to a national championship, ended her college career six years ago.
But she’s been able to extend her competitive playing days thanks to the South Jersey Women’s Fast-pitch League, one of two fast-pitch leagues in South Jersey tailored to current college players who are looking to stay sharp, as well as former players like Schlichtig who keep playing for the love of the game.
“(I plan to keep pitching) until I cannot physically move,” said Schlichtig, 27, now the head coach at Haddon Heights. “You play your whole life, to stop playing now doesn’t make any sense. So it’s fun, you get out there and stay competitive.
“Our league was the only one I knew about in the area, then this other league came on. I think it’s awesome. Baseball has Tri-County, they have Salem County, they have a whole bunch of leagues to continue playing in. The girls didn’t have that until semi-recently.”

George Corcoran founded the South Jersey league in 1996 for a player just like Schlichtig — his daughter, Tara. When her high school career ended, the current head coach at Northern Burlington was looking for a way to continue playing, and her dad delivered.
The league started with four teams but now consists of eight, located all over South Jersey. Each team plays a 20-game schedule from the last week of June until the last week of July, and the top four make the playoffs.
Some of the area’s premier players of the last decade have participated over the years. This season, standout pitchers Nicole Pagano (St. Joe’s-Hammonton) and Lisa Sweeney (Rancocas Valley) join Schlichtig among the league’s top arms. Former Gloucester County stars Caitlyn Reuter (Clearview) and Allison Pfrommer (Delsea) are also current players.
“It’s kind of a who’s-who of people that have played in South Jersey,” George Corcoran said. “Chris Sweeney was one of the original pitchers in the league. We’ve had Ashley Griffith from Lenape, Crystal Feo from Washington Township, who was all-state. Recently, we’ve had Michelle Schlichtig from Haddon Heights and Colleen Oswald from Paulsboro. It’s been pretty neat.
