Rickey Smiley gets laughs by embracing inner old lady

"It's almost like I'm an old lady in a grown man's body," Smiley said during a recent phone interview. "I go to bed between 8 and 9. I bake cakes. I make good dinners."

When he's entertaining audiences, one of the most requested characters Smiley portrays on his program, "The Rickey Smiley Morning Show," and during his live and televised acts is Bernice Jenkins, a staunch elderly lady who wears gigantic hats on Sundays as she reads the church announcements.

"Everybody can relate to her," Smiley said. "Everybody has a grandmother."

Smiley will bring Mrs. Jenkins and other characters he's developed over the years to a live show on Saturday, July 23, at Brunswick Community College's Odell Williamson Auditorium in Bolivia. "The Rickey Smiley Morning Show" can be heard in Wilmington between 6 and 10 a.m. Monday through Friday on radio station Coast 97.3 FM.

The appearance will mark the second time Smiley has entertained an audience at the Brunswick County auditorium, where he performed last summer.

Remembering his last visit, Smiley said he was impressed by the beauty of the area.

"I like small towns … I don't like overcrowded, overpopulated cities," said Smiley, who lives in Birmingham, Ala., where he has raised two sons and eight adopted children. "I just like to keep it simple. I'm excited about being able to come back."

On this visit, Smiley said he plans to get the audience involved as much as possible.

"We have everybody up dancing and having a good time. Sometimes I let them come up on stage," Smiley said. "We make everybody a part of the show that wants to be a part of it and we have a great time."

In addition to radio, Smiley's work has included TV appearances as host of "BET Comic View," "Def Comedy Jam: All Stars Vol. 11," The Nashville Network and Tyler Perry's "Meet the Browns." Smiley is also known for making prank phone calls, and he said the latest volume of his prank call albums, his sixth, will be available for purchase this weekend.
