McCaffery: Contenders coming for Phillies

For when the switch-hitting, run-producing Beltran became a Giant, it screamed that the rest of the National League is not so intimidated by the Phillies, their baseball-best record or their stack of All-Star starting pitchers. It said that the Giants remained confident that their triumph in the last NLCS was one of substance, not luck, and that it could be repeated. And if Atlanta were to supplement its threateningly left-handed bullpen with the most appealing player available in trade, the Phillies could enter next week not as the most capable National League team of a pennant, and not as the second most capable, but as the one shuffling right there on the bronze medal stand. That’s all perception, of course, a matter of taste, why they play the games after all --- to try to rate the competitors, their strengths, the way they match up. And it’s possible that the Phillies could be the National League’s best team even if they come away with nothing more at the trade deadline than a latter-day Turk Wendell. It’s just that the Giants, fresh off of beating Cole Hamels, 2-1, Wednesday, in a game strangely reminiscent of the 2010 NLCS, had a chance to buy one of two things: That nonsense … or Beltran.

“With Carlos (Beltran) hitting in the three hole now, I’d say we are similar to last year,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “We know pitching is our strength. We need to catch the ball. And we still need to find ways to score runs. It’s worked for us. It’s been working this year.
