Guinta must face reality about family budgets

July 24 — To the Editor:

In his opinion piece that appeared in the July 24 edition of Seacoast Sunday News, Congressman Frank Guinta stated that "Each month, Granite State families sit down and plan their budget. They calculate how much money they expect to come in, they add up everything they need to spend money on, and they balance the two."

This is the same analogy that Ken Sheffert, one of our state representatives here in Hampton, used during the 2010 campaign. While very quaint and "Norman Rockwellesque," what Guinta and Sheffert miss in their analogy is that sometimes after families have cut out discretionary items such as movies, dinners out, a new pair of expensive basketball shoes or even cable TV, they are still left with unavoidable items such as a mortgage or car payment, health care bills, savings for their children's education and their own retirement, food and other essentials.

Faced with that, many families are forced to look for other sources of income; members of the family take on a second or a third job because that is what they know they need to do to protect their family today and into the future. There are many reasons so many families have been forced to do this over the course of the past 30 or 40 years, but it is a lasting credit to these hard-working families that they have been willing to step up and fill the gap in order to protect their future. That is the lesson Guinta, Sheffert and others of their ideological persuasion should recognize. When our founding fathers gathered in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787 to form "a more perfect union," they acknowledged that each of us have a shared responsibility to each other; to provide for the common good and protect our shared destiny. Over the years, we have established specific programs to ensure that vision is implemented. Those programs cost money. Yes, we must eliminate waste and inefficiency in our government. Yes, we must re-examine and re-confirm what our priorities for the future should be. But to suggest that we cannot afford to honor the commitments we have made to each other, when we are at the same time unwilling to follow the example of families everywhere and look at ways to generate more revenue fairly and equitably is disingenuous at best, and it simply perpetuates the myth that there really is a free lunch and that any cuts in spending will be painless.
