SALONIKA "LA MADRE DE ISRAEL" THE MOTHER OF ISRAEL

Became the world center of Sephardic Jewry following the influx of Jews from Spain in 1492, and was home to the “creme de la crème” of Spain, according to historian Rabbi Shlomo of the House of Levi. And even long before the Spanish Inquisition, from the time of the Second Temple, Salonikan Jews often outnumbered other residents of the city. Located in the hub between Asia, Europe and Africa, the “Madre de Israel,” as it was known, became the shelter for persecuted Jews from historical centers of the Diaspora on each continent, including Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Syria, Poland, Hungary, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and more. The richly diverse refugees were always welcomed, and the resulting eclectic and vibrant Jewish community was indisputably one of the most important ones in the world, especially during the period of 1492-1943.

, when over 90 percent of the population was silently whisked to their deaths in Auschwitz, this time with no warning, no fanfare and no option to convert. Of the small number of survivors, most left Europe after the war, but a handful weathered the aftermath for decades.A full generation later, the painstaking job of rebuildinga community began. Presently, there is a small Jewishcommunity that maintainsthe ancient synagogues, the historical sites, a communal center witha mikveh, a home for the elderly, a museum, and children’s Hebrew classes. Many of the local Jews are unaffiliated or live in areas surrounding Salonika. Some are not even aware of their heritage.

At the request of a small group of interested Balkan Jews, Rabbi Yoel Kaplan, who lives in Salonika with his wife and six children, has been providing Jewish services to the unaffiliated and dispersed Jews of the region. For three years, he has organized Passover sedarim , which was held in the Astoria Hotel near the ancient Jewish quarter, hosted close to 200 tourists and local residents. In Salonika, many tourists from the USA, Israel, and South America arrive searching for keys to their ancestry or for traces of a relative.

During the rest of the year, Rabbi Kaplan travels the surrounding countryside of Salonika and the Balkans, making contact with dispersed and forgotten Jews, and Israelis. With the warmth of a Jewish uncle, he teaches while providing Jewish supplies, kosher food, books and religious items. From Salonika to Kosova, Rabbi Kaplan has met Jews who were clinging to random Jewish customs or rituals in places devoid of Judaism, and were eager to learn more about their heritage. He has also met Jews who were saved from the Nazis by local non-Jews as children and knew nothing about their heritage.

And avoid imposing a 21st century scientific and historical mindset on the ancient authors. Like stories from ancient history that other cultures have, the Old Testament undergirds the Jewish and Christian cultural identity.

Ancient Jewish manuscripts reveal a forgotten history | Past Horizons

Ew research has uncovered a forgotten chapter in the history of the Bible, offering a rare glimpse of Byzantine Jewish life and culture.

The study by Cambridge University researchers suggests that, contrary to long-accepted views, Jews continued to use a Greek version of the Bible in synagogues for centuries longer than previously thought. In some places, the practice continued almost until living memory.

The Cairo Genizah was not an archive designed to preserve documents. It was a “receptacle,” a final resting place or cache of “trashed” documents written in Hebrew or transliterated into Hebrew text, Arabic and other languages during the Middle Ages. The Ben-Ezra Synagogue in Cairo systematically disposed of deceased persons’ documents in a special vaulted room in the attic of the synagogue, accessible through a hole in the wall. Some of the Geniza’s contents had already gone to private collections or libraries – mostly via scholarly visitors or Middle Eastern antiquity markets. Luckily, Cairo’s dry climate prevented complete deterioration of the remaining writings even though they were damaged due to the ageing process.

In 1896, the importance of the Cairo Genizah

Now, a fully searchable online corpus ( http://www.gbbj.org ) has gathered these manuscripts together, making the texts and analysis of them available to other scholars for the first time.

“The translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek between the 3rd and 1st centuries BCE is said to be one of the most lasting achievements of the Jewish civilization – without it, Christianity might not have spread as quickly and as successfully as it did,” ” he added.

Close study of the Cairo Genizah fragments by Professor de Lange led to the discovery that some contained passages from the Bible in Greek written in Hebrew letters. Others contained parts of a lost Greek translation made by a convert to Judaism named Akylas in the 2nd century CE.

Remarkably, the fragments date from 1,000 years after the original translation into Greek, showing use of the Greek text was still alive in Greek-speaking synagogues in the Byzantine Empire and elsewhere.

Manuscripts in other libraries confirmed the evidence of the Cambridge fragments, and added many new details. It became clear that a variety of Greek translations were in use among Jews in the Middle Ages.
