Letter: Looking for definition of 'middle class'

I recently read a letter from a teacher complaining about Gov. Walker's "War on the Middle Class."

Evidently, middle class means people earning an average of $52,644 a year in Wisconsin with another $30,000 in benefits, only having to work 190 days a year, retire at 55, and get health insurance paid for eight years after retirement.

I came to the realization that I'm not middle class.

Our current economic status shows this is not sustainable.

How does Madison acquire the funds to pay its bills? As Wisconsin is not rich in natural resources, it relies on taxes and other fees — be it income tax, property tax, sales tax, etc.

Taxes paid by privately employed individuals, businesses and corporations are the largest percentage of what supports our government. Public employees might pay state income tax but that money comes back to them in wages and other compensation.

There are the attack ads: "Randy Hopper voted to give corporations huge tax breaks." Good! We'll need the jobs they provide to pay the taxes for these generous pension packages.

According to The Tax Foundation, Wisconsin ranks fourth among states in tax burden in the U.S.

Wisconsin spent $10,791 per student in 2008, the highest of any Midwestern state, yet two-thirds of eighth-graders failed proficiency tests in 2009.

In June, 18,000 private sector jobs were created in the U.S. Of those 18,000 jobs, 12,900 were in Wisconsin. Thank you Scott Walker and Randy Hopper.
