The Older Home: Estate sales offer good merchandise at good prices
Shop estate sales! With the help of the Internet, it’s even easier than it used to be.
"It’s a wonderful way to get bargains if you’re just starting out or have a tight budget," said Raj Basak, owner of Hassle Free Estate Sales (hasslefreeestatesales.com). Basak started his business two years ago as a hobby, but found it so lucrative he now does it full-time, running many sales in North Jersey as well as Connecticut and New York.
"We do everything, from very high-end homes to foreclosures," he said. "Sometimes the owners have passed away, but sometimes they’re just downsizing."
At a recent sale at one Nyack, N.Y. waterfront home, he sold a new Ethan Allen dining room set worth $10,000 for $2,000. A home in Suffern featured imported marble from Russia and Italy.
"We offer 80 percent off or more," Basak said. "We work on a percentage rate, where some companies do a flat rate, so you can find great value on the items."
Spy Before You Buy
Basak advertises his sales on estatesales.net, along with photographs of the merchandise.
"You can see before you go what kind of house it is, and whether you want to be bothered," he explained. "If you want to get an idea of the price range, you can email us.
"People today are busy, so they can’t go to every sale. That’s why we take up to 150 pictures."
Brenda Hogan Devereux runs The Real McCoy estate and house sales out of Montville (realmccoyestatesales.com). She uses her own website to post photos of desirable items available at upcoming sales.
"You can really shop around without even going to the sales," she said. "We have tons of great deals, at prices way below retail, and it’s good, solid merchandise."
She said shoppers come to her sales with printouts of what they saw online—"It’s a beautiful thing when they can shop even before they get here."
Treasure Hunting
"You never know what you’re going to find," Devereux added. "Furniture, older pottery, primitives... One recent house had 150 years worth of merchandise, from three or four generations."
She said she covers all of North Jersey and has worked in homes of all ages.
"We had a sale in a Montville house that belonged to a senator in the late 1800s," she recalled. "It had 35 stained-glass windows and woodwork to die for. It was a chance of a lifetime, to see and work in it. We sold parlor sofas, pottery, glassware and wrought-iron garden furniture.
