Local nonprofit in competition for $25000 grant from soft drink giant
After a month of competition, a local nonprofit that provides equine therapy to child-abuse victims is hoping to keep its No. 2 spot for a $25,000 grant.
In May, Marley's Mission submitted a grant application to the Pepsi Refresh Project, which offers grants of $5,000, $10,000, $25,000 and $50,000 to projects that get the top number of votes from around the world.
If the local group wins, it plans to use about $20,000 of the grant to fund scholarships for children coping with sexual or physical abuse to come to the facility for therapy sessions with horses, according to Gene Talerico, president of Marley's Mission and first assistant district attorney in Lackawanna County. The remaining $5,000 would be used to purchase equipment for the nonprofit, he added.
Children who come to Marley's Mission are paired with a horse, a trauma counselor and an equine therapist to help the children work through their emotions, Mr. Talerico explained.
The therapy is free for all children who come to the nonprofit, and "$1,000 can provide six months of therapy for one child," he said.
The nonprofit was started by April Loposky, a Fell Twp. resident whose young daughter was assaulted in her bedroom in July 2009. The assailant, Felix Montoya, is serving life in prison.
At press time, Marley's Mission was the second-highest vote-getter in Pepsi Refresh's $25,000 category. People can vote for up to five ideas per day online and via text message.
Some Pepsi products also come with a special code that can be worth up to 100 votes, and Mr. Talerico said there is a group of dedicated people who are using those codes to vote for Marley's Mission.
"They're digging through trash cans (to find discarded bottle caps), whatever they have to do," Mr. Talerico said.
