CT 'extremely sensitive' in cases of acute headache

“This observation challenges the dogma of performing a lumbar puncture in all patients despite a negative result on computed tomography,” they wrote.

When CT imaging was obtained more than six hours after headache onset, they said doctors should continue to be cautious because of the decreasing sensitivity for subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Almost 2 per cent of patients were lost to all active follow-up at six months in the study, however nearly three-quarters of these patients were known to be alive and free from subarachnoid haemorrhage at least one month after the initial visit, the authors said.
