Wolf-whistling parrot spotted in Millville, captured in photo

MILLVILLE — Less than a mile as the crow flies from where a woman said she spotted a bear Wednesday, another woman spotted another exotic South Jersey visitor Thursday and has photographic proof.

“My friend heard this whistling all day but she ignored it,” said Michie Perez, who owns a house on Fairton Road just off of Route 49 in Millville.

“I got home to let the dogs out, and I heard the whistling too. I ignored it at first but then I whistled back. Then I heard it whistle back at me so I kept looking for what was doing it and it was in a tree,” she said.

In a tall pine tree in her yard she spotted the origin of the noise, an African Grey parrot, although she did not know it at the time.

She described the noise as the classic wolf whistle that denotes appreciation of the female form.

“I felt bad because it was hot outside and I know they’re not from around here. I don’t know what they eat, so I went to Petsmart to get it some bird food.”

While at the store Perez spotted a bag of bird food with a picture of the exact type of bird illustrated within its logo. She described it as gray with red tail feathers.

“I asked the attendant what type of bird that was and she said it was an African Grey,” she said.

The helpful attendant also informed Perez that the bird food was not necessary as this particular species of bird enjoys dry crackers.

Perez returned home and placed out some crumbled dry crackers but to no avail. The bird decided to stay in its roost, allowing Perez and her friend the opportunity to snap a few pictures on their cell phone and camera.

Perez then called Millville animal control officer Anthony Cills. The bird flew off to places unknown before he could arrive.

“He said he had spoken with someone on Esibill Avenue who saw it too,” she said.

Cills related to her that the bird had been climbing up a tree on that street using its legs and beak, indicating that its wings may be clipped.

On Esibill Avenue Friday afternoon there was no sign of the bird.

Two women who were ushering two children into a car on that street said their neighbor across the road had spotted the bird on Thursday.

“She said she heard this whistle and she thought it was her husband getting fresh with her,” one of them said.

It turned out to be the parrot however.
