Rotary clubs organize volunteer trip to Joplin

Now that national news crews have left the destruction that occurred in Joplin, and the lost and deceased have been accounted for, a city in shambles must now look to rebuild. And a group of Columbia residents wants to give them a hand.

Members of local Rotary clubs are organizing Columbia for Joplin, a one-day volunteer event that will give participants a chance to donate their time and their toil to residents of Joplin who were affected by the May 22 tornado. “This is a way to connect,” Neil Riley, a member of the Columbia Sunrise Southwest Rotary club and an organizer for the event, said in a news release. “It’s one thing to write a check. It’s another thing to get involved personally.”

Riley said in the release that he was inspired to arrange the event after he read a story about University of Missouri football players traveling to Joplin to help residents there shortly after the devastation. After the tornado, there was an outpouring of support for Joplin residents from individuals and groups — so much so that at one point organizations in Joplin asked for donations to cease for lack of storage space.

But Kerrie Bloss, president of the club, said fewer groups have been providing aid to the city as the months pass, and it is imperative to continue to help the city get back on its feet.

“Joplin needs to rebuild,” Bloss said.

Bloss said the website, www.ColumbiaForJoplin.com, will be operating within the next few days and volunteers will be able to register there.

The event is scheduled for Aug. 27. Volunteers will meet at 4 a.m. at The Crossing, 3615 Southland Drive, to begin the three-and-a-half hour trek to Joplin. Volunteers are advised to arrange their own transportation. Work will conclude that day at 4 p.m. Organizers for Columbia for Joplin are coordinating the event with AmeriCorps, a not-for-profit that is coordinating volunteer efforts in Joplin.

Volunteers are charged a $10 registration fee, which covers the cost of a T-shirt and lunch. Organizers say volunteers must be at least 12 years old.

For volunteers who would not be able to contribute a full day of physical labor, non-labor intensive tasks such as donations sorting are available. Leading up to the day of the event, registrants are encouraged to check the website for updates.

Bloss said the group expects to provide construction work for residents but said the group will not know until about one week before the event what type of work the volunteers will be asked to provide.

There must be a better way and there is. However, it requires that we abandon the ways of the perpetual deceivers and look within to discover our innate and powerful capability to ‘know’ everything we need in order to grow and live a healthy and prosperous life.
