“I oversee the agriculture and men’s crafts program at Old Sturbridge Village. What this includes is a livestock program where we keep cattle (cows, heifers, oxen), pigs, sheep, chickens and turkeys. I also handle the planting and harvesting of our field crops, which include corn, rye, oats, pumpkins and potatoes. We also have over 50 varieties of heirloom apple trees. On the craft program side, I oversee the blacksmith shop, tin shop, pottery shop, shoe shop, print office, cooper shop, brooms and the three mills (saw, grist and carding).”

What is a typical day like?

“Busy. The day starts out normally with chores like any farm. Next is making sure that all the stations are covered with the appropriate staff/volunteer. Then, if I am working in costume, we meet as a farm staff to go over the plan for the day. Next, we head into the Freeman Farm House, where we share what is on the agenda that day. Afterwards, round two of chores: letting cows out of station, then putting all the animals out into pasture. Finally, it is off to accomplish what we have planned for the day.”

What is the most satisfying part of your job?

“The teaching aspect, having the aha! moment with people that have never made that connection before. Other things that are really satisfying are the promotion of agriculture in an area where more people are further removed from it.”

“Over 100, between year-round, seasonal and interns.”

What education and training prepared you for your job?

“I went to college to become a teacher, and in a way, I am. All of the training has been simply on the job. We are very fortunate to have very skilled staff that has been here for a number of years and I have been able to soak in as much as I can. The wonderful part of the job is you never stop learning.”

What led you to apply for such an unusual job?

“Well, it was actually a college professor who got me the information on an internship at OSV. The internship spots were all filled, but luckily they were hiring college students to run game and family programming for the summer of 2005. After the first summer, I knew I was hooked. I was subsequently trained in the pottery shop and agriculture. Slowly I was moved more and more toward agriculture.
