Shands and UF expanding reach into Gainesville community

1. Shands Cancer Hospital: Cost $388 million, opened November 2009, houses the Cancer Hospital, the Shands Critical Care Center, which features a level 1 trauma center, the adult emergency room and -- soon to come -- a Chest Pain Center

2. Pediatrics Emergency Room: Cost $5 million, houses a kids-only emergency area, along with the Pediatric After Hours Clinic.

3. Emerging Pathogens Institute: Cost $55 million, opened January 2010, Florida's first research facility focused on infectious diseases threatening plants, animals, people and food safety.

4. Biomedical Sciences Building: Cost $90.5 million, opened spring 2010, for laboratory research.

5. Small Animal Hospital: Cost $58 million, houses the newest, most advanced veterinary hospital in the Southeast.

6. Clinical and Translational Research Building: Cost $45 million, laboratory research in a variety of specialties, will speed scientific discoveries to patients. Groundbreaking was May 26.

7. ORTHOcare After Hours Clinic: Opened in May, housed in the Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Institute next to the UF Hilton. Expert care for all bone and joint issues.

The latest investment in Gainesville comes in the form of a new $6 million Family Medicine Center, to be built at Main Street and Northeast 16th Avenue.

"We feel it represents a commitment to our safety-net mission," said Dr. David Guzick, senior vice president for Health Affairs at UF and president of the UF&Shands health system, noting that the non-profit hospital and health system provides a significant level of care to low-income, uninsured and vulnerable populations. "We still recognize that this is part of our DNA and this is our responsibility in this community."

The family practice clinic is replacing the old clinic on Southwest 4th Avenue, built in the 1970s. The new building should open in June 2012.

"We could have renovated it, but it wouldn't lead to a modern facility — it would lead to a renovated old facility," Guzick said.

Brad Pollitt, vice president of facilities for UF&Shands, said the new 25,000-square-foot, two-story primary-care clinic will be located on a three-acre parcel with ample parking. It will feature 24 exam rooms, a large patient waiting area, a conference room, and other services.

The University of Florida's Eastside Clinic on Waldo Road will remain open.

Three new specialty clinics open or opening soon include the ORTHOcare After Hours Clinic, the Pediatrics After Hours Cinic and the Chest Pain Center.

Today, fresh out of the bag a buddy wants to give it a try. I have my moon clips all loaded up so he loads his ammo without the clips and gives it a go. Factory ammo. Well the plus is we found out he has a wicked flinch but it would not fire a single cartridge. He then loads up a moon clip with my ammo and it fires 5 but gets a light strike on one.
