A.M. Best Europe - Rating Services Limited has assigned a financial strength rating of A- Excellent and issuer credit rating of a- to Gulf Life Insurance Company K.S.C. (GLIC) Kuwait. The outlook assigned to both ratings is stable. The ratings of GLIC reflect its good local business profile, robust overall earnings and adequate level of risk-adjusted capitalisation. Established in 2008 with the transfer of GIC's life and medical business, GLIC has quickly become the largest Kuwaiti company focusing solely on life and medical insurance. Although maintaining a strong position within its local market, GLIC's insurance portfolio has concentration risk with a single policy making up a significant proportion of the company's medical portfolio. GLIC has achieved a reasonably stable return on equity of 14.4% and 15.1% in 2010 and 2009, respectively. A.M. Best has some concerns about the poor performance of the company's medical business, given that it accounted for around two thirds of gross premium income in 2010 and generated a significant overall loss.
