Bear shooting protested

Officers responded to the area and saw an untagged male yearling black bear run into the wooded area near Route 46, then shortly after observed him run back out and across the highway several times "creating a hazardous situation for motorists," said detective Sgt. Robert Bracken. He said Clifton Animal Control officers arrived on scene to offer assistance after police encountered the bear.

According to a City Hall official, Animal Control has a tranquilizer gun but it was unclear whether they arrived before or after the bear was shot. The City's police department is not equipped with a tranquilizer gun, said Bracken.

After a few hours of watching him run around, a decision was made by the officers on scene to shoot the bear to prevent a serious motor vehicle accident. One officer fired a shot that hit the bear, which ran into the woods where he was later located.

"Police officers are not happy to have to take those measures and only shot the bear as a last resort," Bracken said. "The officers had to weigh the risk to the public and unfortunately it had to be handled this way.

The bear was shot around 4:30 or 5 p.m. and the Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) representatives arrived on scene an hour or two after the shooting to claim the bear's body.

"Police officers don't like to shoot any animal and we do that only as a last resort," Bracken said.

Larry Ragonese, an Environmental Protection Agency spokesman, said police departments will often reach out to DFW officials for on-scene assistance or remote advisory if there bear sighting in an urban area. Upon observing the bear's erratic behavior, Ragonese said the Clifton Police Department contacted the DFW to inform them of the issue but its staff members were overseeing an incident regarding a different bear at another location.

"We could not be there but the police officers did communicate with us, which is part of normal protocol," he said. "It had been determined to be a public safety issue in a highly urbanized area so they had the prerogative to put down the bear. The police obviously deal with serious matters all the time and certainly have our permission to use their best judgment in these situations."

He said last month's incident in which a black bear reached a major roadway in Union Township was another example in which local police officers waited as long as they could for DFW officials before shooting and killing the animal.

Brief Guide On Adirondack Mountains

Adirondack are a mountain range located in the northeastern part of New York that runs through Clinton, Washington, Essex, Warren, Franklin, Saratoga, Fulton, Saint Lawrence, Hamilton and Lewis counties. The mountains are often included by geographers in Appalachian Mountains, but they bear a greater geological similarity to Laurentian Mountains of Canada.

Adirondack Mountains are bordered on the east by Lake George and Lake Champlain, which separate them from Green Mountains in Vermont.

They are bordered to the south of Mohawk Valley and to the west by Tug Hill Plateau, separated by Black River. Adirondack is controlled within 6.1 million acres of Adirondack Park, these comprises constitutionally protected Forest Preserve of around 2.3 million acres.

It contains thousands of lakes, streams and brooks, most famously Lake Placid adjacent to village of Lake Placid. There are quite a lot of other peaks such as Algonquin Peak, Haystack, Skylight, Whiteface, Dix and Giant.

The Adirondack form the southernmost part of the Eastern forest-boreal transition ecoregion. The forests of Adirondacks include broad-leafed, spruce and pine trees.

There are around 260 species of birds found in these mountains such as boreal chickadees, crossbills, gray jays, common loons, Bicknell’s thrushes, mourning warblers, spruce grouse, bay-breasted warblers, Philadelphia vireos, ruby-crowned kinglets, rusty blackbirds, black-backed woodpeckers and American Three-toed Woodpeckers.

Some of the most significant streams in the area include Ausable, Hudson, Schroon, Black, Saranac, Oswegatchie, Raquette and Grasse rivers. There are a couple of larger lakes, which includes Lake George, Schroon, Blue Mountain, Big and Little Tupper, The Fulton Chain, Long, Raquette and the Upper and Lower Saranac.

Adirondack Mountains in New York is both the first government protected and the largest park in the United States. There are over 400 species of animals in the park including deer, Beavers, foxes, moose, wolves, coyotes, wild pigs, wild boar, jack rabbits, turkey, mink, bald eagles, lynx, bob cats, mountain lions, Timber rattlesnakes and astonishing amount of black bears known as Adirondack Black Bear. Whiteface, Gore Mountain, Killington, Bellaire and West Mountain are great for sledding and skiing.
