Motor show is building its mana

A change of date and an accord between big-city rivals Melbourne and Sydney is causing the annual Australian International Motor Show to grow in size and significance, reports Rob Maetzig .

Sydney and Melbourne don't really like each other. If either city can get one over the other, it will. Most of the time.

In past years, this rivalry has also applied to motor shows. The two Australian cities, and others such as Brisbane, regularly hosted their own events in an increasingly expensive inter-city car-shows war.

While this might have been all right when economic conditions were buoyant and the Australian manufacturers were selling large numbers of vehicles, things have recently got considerably tougher.

So a couple of years ago, the Sydney and Melbourne officials got their heads together and decided to run a single major international motor show on a rotation basis. They also decided to change the date to mid-year to avoid clashes with other international events. Previously, Melbourne had held its show in March, and Sydney in September.

Last year, late in the year for the last time, the first joint-venture show was hosted by Sydney, and it was an encouraging event, even though the effects of the global financial crisis meant that most of the big European manufacturers were not present.

This week, it is Melbourne's turn to host the Australian International Motor Show, and it is set to be the largest motor show ever held in Australasia. Just maybe, it can now lay claim to being one of the most important motor shows in the fast-growing Asia-Pacific region.

There is still some way to go, because missing from this year's show lineup are the likes of Europe's Ferrari, Fiat, Alfa-Romeo and Citroen, the United States' Chrysler and Jeep, South Korea's SsangYong and China's Great Wall.

But encouragingly, big-name luxury and performance manufacturers, such as Bentley, BMW, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover and Porsche are present, and they have helped fill 30 per cent more floor space than Sydney in an estimated $400 million motoring showcase, featuring more than 50 concept vehicles and future models.

Last Friday was the show's media and industry day, a fast-paced series of 26 separate car-company presentations. The first such presentation was on the dot of 7.30am, and they continued until 1pm, at which stage frazzled and footsore journalists headed out the doors to file their copy.
