Detroit jazz legend Wendell Harrison releases first new CD in 7 years

"Here's my thing," says Wendell Harrison, describing his personal manifesto. "People can help themselves. You can do it yourself rather than wait for somebody else to do it for you. That's been my whole way of life. I don't make a lot of money, but at least I'm in control of what I do."

Harrison, a Detroit-born tenor saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, entrepreneur and educator, is celebrating the release of "It's About Damn Time," his first CD in seven years. At 68, he's best known as a cofounder of Tribe, the legendary Detroit jazz collective that came together in the early '70s in a strong-willed act of African-American self-determination, connecting the dots between music, social justice and community building.

Tribe was a remarkable chapter in Detroit cultural history, and it still resonates. Ever the strategist, Harrison has cut roughly 18 licensing deals since the '90s on behalf of Tribe to reissue vintage recordings on small labels in England, Europe, Japan and America. Deals range from $500 per single to $2,500 per album. These records, along with recent collaborations led by Detroit techno pioneer Carl Craig, have raised Harrison's profile, lassoing fans smitten by the Midas touch of Detroit musicians and prompting adulatory retrospectives in the specialty press.

Yet Harrison's creative life transcends Tribe, sweeping through a career lasting more than 50 years, including the better part of the 1960s in New York and on the road. He has played bebop and post-bop, R&B and funk, dabbled in free jazz and led a unique clarinet choir. His résumé includes work with bluesy modernist guitar hero Grant Green, grits 'n' gravy saxophonist Hank Crawford and Sun Ra, an avant-garde icon.

Under the umbrella of Rebirth, the nonprofit organization dedicated to jazz that he founded after Tribe disbanded in 1977, Harrison has recorded more than a dozen albums as a leader, written method books, led in-school programs and produced countless concerts and live radio broadcasts featuring visiting stars. The recession has cut Rebirth's annual budget by half to about $40,000, but Harrison soldiers on.

"Wendell never rests," says trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, a key member of Tribe. "He's always on a quest. His energy is a gift."

A strong second act

It has been a bumpy ride at times, and one way to look at Harrison's life is as a morality play in two acts. A debilitating addiction to heroin nearly closed the show before intermission, but since overcoming drugs and returning to Detroit in 1970, his career blossomed in ways that no one, least of all Harrison, might have predicted.

Review: Batman Live at Metro Radio Arena

Creative visions, big production values and DC's own stamp of approval back then certainly gave the forthcoming show that extra edge. Put aside any preconceptions of a certain failed Spiderman Broadway musical – this promised to be anything but!

Shelter says Harrison knows what he wants, but at this point in his life he welcomed letting someone else do the heavy lifting of production, marketing and financing. Harrison was born to highly educated parents. His mother was a Detroit teacher with a

Interview With Paul Lennar, Egostereo Remix Contest Winner | Find ...

I present my own Radio Show named Global Dance Radio Tv. My productions style is atmospheric and also dense and dark, full of soft rythms, progressive groove and melodic lines. “I really never be satisfied, but I always try to improve my sound and musical style”. I also negotiate my sound work with artists and labels who may be interested.

When have you started with music production? Actually, I began to produce electronic music 3 year ago, influenced by great Dj’s like: Daft Punk, Sasha, John Digweed, Markus Schulz, Jerome Isma-Ae, Cid Inc, Egostereo and many more. Always trying to creat and show new yas to feel the music. That’s a little dificult because some international producers don’t use to trust in the work of south american producers, but in this kind of contest is possible to prove otherwise jeeee

I have a very simple studio, Rokit 6 KRK & Studiophile AV30 M-Audio monitors, , Audio Interface Pro Tools Mbox Mini, Controller Akai APC40, Controller M-Audio Axion 25,  Mac Book OSX Lion, Mic Sennheiser e835, Ableton Live with Vst´s: Moog, Nexus, sylenth1, Waves, z3ta, Omnisphere, Trilian & many more.  As I’m just beggining I have no physical machines, to make the final mastering processes I all do it with vst, it demands to be very original and to have a great creativity to surprise labels.

Yes, Im also a Dj and I like to use (Ableton Live for live shows), I considere to have a technical scratching skill, transmiting my emotions and playing with the crowd feelings, always handling new tendences with contemporary and vanguard music. I offer a powerfull energy on the dance floor using some Deep Techno, Groove, Minmal Trance fussions toghether with experimental sounds of my equipement. I have played warming up parties for great Djs like: Santiago Niño, Thomas Penton, Andrea Saenz, Milton Channels, Randall Jones and some others. I have also been Dj Guest Mix in radio stations like 1430 AM, Dj Club Magazine(Mexico), Also in audio streaming pages like ADN Alternative en (ARG), Radio 4/4 Livestrem (Estocolmo) (Colombian Groove Cartel), por Pure.fm  and Dance Radio  y now at days in Tv Streaming on www.atomikchannel.com Of course it is. I think this is not just for producing or remixing tracks of other artists, but also for learning and practicing, for me it’s a very useful tool to may be acepted by several important labels and it’s an easier work way for remixing. Ahh .. and the best, we can win great prizes, I really think any good and talent producer may be the winner. I always say it !!!
