Water restrictions in Cleveland no longer voluntary

Voluntary water restrictions are now mandatory in the City of Cleveland. The city’s daily water usage has reached a sufficient amount that Stage 2 Mandatory Water Restrictions of the City’s Drought Contingency Plan needs to be implemented. Restrictions will remain in effect and will no longer be voluntary.

Landscape irrigation will be restricted from 6 p.m. until 10 a.m. on designated days. The designated water days for residential customers are as follows:

• Sunday for even numbered addresses

• Saturday for odd numbered addresses

Tuesday is the designated water days for commercial, industrial and institutional customers.

Designated water days for City Parks and Educational facilities are as follows:

• Quadrant 1: West of Washington Ave. and South of BNSF Railroad

• Quadrant 2: West of Washington Ave. and North of BNSF Railroad

• Quadrant 3: East of Washington Ave. and South of FM 105/SH321

• Quadrant 4: East of Washington Ave. and North of FM 105/SH321

Use of city water to wash any motorized vehicle, motorbike, boat, trailer, airplane, motor home, camper or other vehicle is prohibited except during the hours of 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Persons washing a car must use a hand-held bucket and hand-held hose with an automatic shutoff nozzle.

Commercial vehicle washing operations may occur anytime provided the facility uses water recirculation.

Washing of vehicles to protect health, safety and welfare of the public: such as, emergency vehicles, garbage trucks, food transport vehicles, etc., are exempt from these restrictions.

Recreational use of water is not allowed except on designated water use days and where water levels in existing recreational facilities may be maintained. Recreational water use includes, but is not limited to, swimming pools, Jacuzzis, hot tubs, wading pools and fountains.

Operation of an ornamental fountain or pond for aesthetic or scenic purposes is prohibited except where necessary to support aquatic life or where such fountain or ponds are equipped with a recirculation system.

Use of water from fire hydrants shall be limited to fire fighting or other related activities necessary to maintain public health, safety and welfare. Use of water from fire hydrants for construction purposes is allowed under permit by the City of Cleveland.

All restaurants are prohibited to serve water to patrons except upon request.

For many teenage students, summer season is a chance to unwind and put their minds at ease from all the thinking they've had to do for classes, homework, and tests. Many even spend their days sleeping in, hanging out with friends, or just relaxing around the house. However, Cleveland Botanical Garden's Green Corps program has a different mentality when it comes to summer time. To us, summer is a time to get busy where it counts...outside! It's an opportunity to keep your mind and body working moving soil, building plant beds, and planting all sorts of plants and vegetables. It's also a time to recruit these high to take what they've been learning in the classroom and start applying it to different situations and life experiences.

Cleveland Botanical Garden Green Corps is an urban agriculture work study program that employs 60 youth from all over the city of Cleveland. Youth, ages 14-18, apply to the Green Corps program just as they would for any other job. They undergo an interview process and are selected by staff to work at one of five urban learning farms in five different neighborhoods. Here is where new worlds of experiences and learning are introduced to them.

At the learning farms our student employees learn to plant, cultivate, maintain, and grow a variety of vegetables from kale to collards, strawberries to raspberries, and everything in between. Green Corps utilizes agriculture to emphasize team work, work skill development, following plans and instruction. We believe that our youth can apply the skills and knowledge they learn in Green Corps to their future jobs and education regardless of the professional or educational field they choose to go in to.

The Green Corps program is mainly supported through grants and donations. This year Eastman Kodak Company kindly donated digital cameras and a hand held camcorder to each for each of our learning farm sites. This donation is especially important to Green Corps so that our youth can capture and document the many moments of learning and working in order to continue telling our story.
