Grand Festival of Art and Books opens Saturday in Fairhope

Fairhope, Alabama - The 29th edition of the Grand Festival of Art will open with a new twist when the first Great Books Festival joined the Saturday event.

The annual art event is set for 10:00 to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the streets of downtown Fairhope. Since 1982, the festival offered visitors of art from suppliers with a wide range of goods - from wood to painting to jewelry.

In past years, about 30,000 customers visited the two-day festival and Kate Fisher, director of the Eastern Shore Art Center, said expectations are good for attendance this year too.

"The weather will be perfect," said Fisher. "I think the call (the festival) is that it is more intimate, not huge and overwhelming, and I think this is the real draw -. And that's what vendors and exhibitors, as well as my hope for the weekend is that the crowds get out and enjoy it and exhibitors are able to have a successful show."

Over 90 artists will compete for a total of $ 3,000 in prize money, with Pensacola artist Paula Payne responsible for selecting the best works in the exhibition.

Throughout the day Saturday, Folks Jam n 'and the Social Club will provide entertainment, while a tent sport enthusiast will satisfy football fans.

"We arranged by Mediacom and Best Buy to make a big screen TV and that will turn the football games," Fisher said.

And with the addition of the Big Book Festival, festival-goers will have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of literary pleasure.

Karin Wilson, owner of the page and palette bookstore, said she felt it was time to bring a book festival to the city.

"I always thought Fairhope need a book festival," says Wilson. "Sonny Brewer was the weekend Southern writers, but last year he would not do either and I felt that was the right time to bring in."

Wilson said the quality of the Grand Art Festival, coupled with a time of fall, the two events made a perfect fit.

"We have so much to Fairhope all the time," says Wilson."I felt like it was the perfect opportunity to join the Grand Art Festival is a wonderful spectacle -.. The art of Nice, it is small and it's just a beautiful time worked this year that we could join forces. "

"We just thought that most events that we can swing into the weekend, the better," Fisher said. "There will be something for everyone.
