Teen hitched ride home from Maine camp
A 16-year-old Worcester girl who hitchhiked 200 miles home from a running camp in Waterville, Maine, Tuesday was playing “Russian roulette” by taking rides from strangers, police said.Waterville police received a report from Colby College Tuesday about 3:45 p.m. saying a girl left the 28th annual Colby College cross-country camp.
A detective and patrol sergeant looked into the matter and learned that the Worcester teenager left wearing a red T-shirt and white running shorts. She had no cellphone and not enough cash to take a cab or bus, Waterville Deputy Police Chief Charles J. Rumsey IV said.
Police did not release her name or address, saying she is a juvenile and also not charged with a crime.
Authorities learned the girl was last seen Tuesday around 9:30 a.m. by her roommate.
“She had indicated she was going to hitchhike back to Worcester,” Deputy Chief Rumsey said. There was some talk about the teen being upset with her family. Her parents were vacationing on Islesboro in Maine at the time.
Area hotels, restaurants and bus stations were checked, and authorities across New England were notified of the missing girl.
Local police, through state police, later learned about a report of a young woman matching the teenager’s description asking for rides at the Kennebunk travel plaza. The sighting was checked, but the girl was gone. The report came in around 2 p.m. Tuesday. About 7 p.m. Tuesday, police were called by the teenager’s father. He reported she had returned home to Worcester and called him, Deputy Chief Rumsey said. A family member was sent to stay with the girl.
The trip may have been a safe trek for the teenager, but police were concerned about her risky behavior.
“What we feel is that when someone pulls over to the side of the road and whether you are a 16-year-old girl or male adult, you don’t have the ability to gauge someone’s intentions,” Deputy Chief Rumsey said. “Folks in the news and police business have seen the results of some of these stories that haven’t gone well.
