Central Wyoming Fair vendors satisfy cravings intellectual and gastronomical

The Wyoming Virtual School, sponsored through the Niobrara County School District, was among 135 nonprofit and commercial vendors who paid between $275 and $400 depending on location to promote their ideas and push their wares last week at the Central Wyoming Fair and Rodeo, fair manager Tom Jones said.

The fair sold all the exhibit spaces, plus the food vendors, Jones said. “The vendor list is as strong as it’s ever been.”

While not as flashy as the neon- and LED-spangled rides, or the down-and-dusty rodeo, the vendors offered fair visitors shopping, community causes,

and food. Lots of food: sugar shocking funnel cakes, coronary corn dogs, and big turkey legs to satisfy your inner Cro-Magnon man cravings.

“They seem to like the turkey legs real good here,” said Pat Martinez, one of the managers of Crabtree Amusements that brings 10 of the outdoor food vendors to the fair along with the rides.

Sweet stuff does well, too, with vendors selling flavored popcorn, cookies, nuts and “All Through the House and Deb’s Fudge Kitchen.”

Debbie and Bart Humphreys of Shoshoni bought an exhibit space for the fourth consecutive year and did well.

So well that they ran out and she had to drive to Shoshoni on Thursday to bake another 250 pounds of fudge — peanut butter, M&M, and all sorts of endorphin-arousing chocolate — in her licensed kitchen, she said.

If she runs out next year, Debbie won’t have so far to go because the Humphreys are moving their fudge and gift business to Casper this fall, she said.

While they tantalized taste buds, the Virtual School joined several exhibits to tickle the imagination.

The Science Zone featured its tarantula and desert tortoise in separate and safe terrariums. Kids could learn the ways of neurons and synapses by jumping on a steel plate that shot a green disc up a pole to ring a bell to show how the brain transmits a message.

Nearby, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management offered stacks of brochures for historic trails, hunting, fishing, camping, wild horses, and fire prevention with the help of an old friend.
